The Hardest Question in 2023

2022 has been gone, what else are you worried about?

What’s your new year’s resolution? — would be the most normal way to start a conversation during the first days of this year. Yet for some people, including me, it is quite hard to just reply the question without putting a deep thought in the answers.

It turns out that it is not just a simple chatter. I know some people do not have a single resolution just because they don’t feel like of having any of it. I also hear that there are people who like to go with the flow instead of setting some fancy checklists.

I know some of my relatives don’t feel very optimistic about the resolutions they have set before, thus they don’t want to repeat those empty promises anymore. For some people, setting goals is not necessarily something that we do only at the beginning of a period, let’s say year or month.

Well, everyone has their own choice and I think there’s nothing wrong with all of it.

Back then I also didn’t feel like to set resolutions since I just liked to go the flow. However it’s changed when The Empire Strikes Back, as I quoted from my previous story.

So I started to write down my goals and wishes.

Not necessarily during new year, tho. However a clean slate is proven to be very effective for some people to make and achieve new goals. The feeling of starting over while letting go of the past (year) can be very powerful.

So If I could wishes for what I really want to achieve in this year, I would say:

  1. Being in the moment more
  2. Less seeking for external validation
  3. Less comparing myself to other, more comparing to the old me
  4. Spending more time to talk with myself
  5. Keeping a gratitude journal
  6. Savoring my hobbies and passions

I think that’s it.

However, the only problem is that it’s still quite vague and abstract. I ever had a feeling when I set the goals too high that even after working so hard trying to achieve those, it never worked.

Abstract vs Achievable Goals

Luckily I realized (many years after ;) ) that the problem is not that the goals were too high. They were unclear.

In my example case, being in the moment more is hard to realize simply because it is not measurable. I still have to figure out how to break it down into small and achievable goals, let’s say:

Abstract goal: Being in the moment more

Achievable goals:

  • Being mindful when eating, at least once a day
  • Exercise breathing for 2 minutes before starting the daily hustle

In your opinion, which one is easier to do and to achieve? Well, that would summarize my point.

In my case, this simple hack actually helps me setting up and realizing small improvements, which gives me confidence to set up another small goals, which leads to another small improvement, and so on.

That’s it for now

I still need to figure out the achievable goals for my other goals, so I have to go now ;)

I hope this year will be great for all of you and we can be a better version of ourselves every single day.

See you!
