Home is whenever I’m in the kitchen
why cooking, baking, brewing, whatever — are rewarding
I love to cook, why must there be a reason? But if that sounds like I’m an idealist, I think I have reasons:
1. I like to eat something good
No need to explain, I’m 100% sure people are the same. Anyway that doesn’t mean my cooking is good. Please keep reading.
2. I don’t want to spend extra money just for a food
This is the reason, thus if I can make it by myself, I will save a lot from extra services (people, tax, logistics, etc).
Some people tell me, well that’s true, but making it all by myself will take me a lot of time, and effort. That’s not practical and that means a cost too.
However since I love to cook, that’s totally fine. In fact, that’s how I make fun!
But don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind spending extra money for some food, especially for special occasions (or to try some food I have no idea how it taste, so that I can make the copycat later, LOL).
As for the special occasions, if there’s a possibility, I’d rather invite you over and cook together, or send you some homemade goodness. ;)
3. I like experimenting
By using ingredients that are available on earth (and other variables: time, temperature, kitchen utensils etc), you can create literally infinite combinations of recipes.
I’ll give you an example, by using only one egg we can make:
- Omelette where the egg is beaten and then cooked in the pan (direct induction) with/without oil, butter, or other kind of fats (will also give different results).
- Sunny side up which is the same as omelette unless the egg is not beaten (the yolks intact).
- Poached which is cooked through a boiling water (convection) without shells, acid is usually added to prevent the whites dispersing in the water, thus maintain its poached form.
- Hard boiled which is also cooked through a boiling water but with the shells intact.
- Scrambled egg which is the same as omelette unless the egg is literally scrambled as it cooks.
- etc
As you might ever see, there are lots of omelette around the world:
- omelette with fried tofu (common in Indonesia)
- french omelette
- spanish omelette
- what else?
See the combinations?
Therefore if we have egg, flour, water we’ll be able to make …….. (fill in the blank)
So let’s start experimenting!
4. I can express myself more easily
Different people, different expressions. There’s someone who prefer draw something to express themselves, or singing, or whatever. As for me, I can spend a whole day in the kitchen.
Just to brew a cup coffee, make breakfast, do a deep-cleaning, or tweak my kitchen utensils. It’s all rewarding activities for me.
5. It’s a work of art, only it’s edible
Who doesn’t love an appealing food that actually taste good? It takes creativity to prepare a dish, every process in cooking is a discovery.
A recipe has no soul. You, as the cook, must bring soul to the recipe. — Thomas Keller
